San Diego County lost nearly 3,600 state and federal subsidized housing units between 1995 and 2016, leaving only 32,000 affordable homes available in the county according to California Housing Partnership Corporation

San Diego County has a shortage of about 142,000 affordable homes and construction of new units is behind demand according to San Diego Housing Federation.

A report released last month on California housing costs said that from 2000 to the first quarter of 2017, the median rent in San Diego County increased 36% while the median household income of a renter increased 4%.

Solution

  • Permanent space to showcase low cost and rapidly-built structures that are modular, ecological, and energy efficient.
  • Collaboration among Architects, Engineers, Designers, Technologists, Housing Developers, Land Owners, Students, Teachers, Homeowners, Government Housing Authorities, etc. that leads to innovative solutions.
  • The Learning Laboratory will explore ideas that will drive down the cost to build, buy, and own homes in the County of San Diego.
  • Goal by 2018 – ideas that are thoroughly vetted in the Learning Laboratory that are both high-impact and highly feasible will be deployed as prototypes on an experimental basis throughout the County.
  • Goal by 2019 – initiatives will be brought to scale, significantly contributing to the County’s ambitious plan to make San Diego a county with a robust supply of affordable housing.

HOM's Commitment

  • HOM is a 501(c)(3) and will be the Project Sponsor/Developer.
  • HOM currently has between $300,000 – $1,000,000 committed to the HILL project and will raise additional funds at no cost to potential partners.
  • HOM will leverage its Board of Directors’ expertise in real estate development to ensure project completion.

Supporting the Hill

  • Provide public/private sponsored site.
    • Ground lease for a minimum of 5 years
    • Minimum of one acre
    • Zoned M or Zoned C
  • Donate/advertise your products at the HILL.
  • Partner with HOM to provide marketing/publicity for the HILL.
  • Partner with HOM to maintain active, year-round programming at the HILL site.
